We Can Actually Make Burgers from Coconut

Who would’ve thought that we could still discover more uses of the awesome coconut tree that has always been richly available around the country? Yes, you read the title right. Aside from the existing many uses of coconut in our lives, we can still uncover something unexpected from it. From food, beauty products, household resources, construction supplies, etc., coconut is indeed an ultra practical tree.

When it comes to food, a lot of dishes we’ve always enjoyed have ingredients that came from coconut. The fruit itself is extremely useful for it has juice, shell, and the outer covering. We can produce commodities from it such as oil, juice, condiments and some major food ingredients. Coconut milk or gata is one of the most famous byproducts from it. And just when we thought that after extracting the gata, the desiccated coconut/sapal ng niyog/coconut pulp will be of no use anymore, we’re once again wrong.

Coconut pulp has already become a known food ingredient too. It is mostly being used as a component for some Pinoy Desserts. But we can actually make burgers out of desiccated coconut! The recipe below makes it the main ingredient for cooking a burger patty. Try for yourself and enjoy!

Desiccated Coconut Burger Recipe

Ingredients:

· 2 cups of desiccated coconut
· leak
· a handful of basil leaves
· 1 medium-sized onion
· a handful of mushroom
· 1 small-sized red bell pepper
· 1 small-sized carrot
· 1 teaspoon celery powder
· 1 teaspoon white pepper
· 1 tablespoon soy sauce
· 2 pieces of egg
· 2 tablespoon flour
· salt and pepper
· cooking oil
· burger Buns
· lettuce (optional)
· cheese (optional)

Procedures:

  1. Cut the following ingredients into small pieces: onion, mushroom, leak, basil leaves, red bell pepper, carrot, celery. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl or container, put 2 cups of desiccated coconut.
  3. Add a teaspoon of celery powder and white pepper. Then proceed adding a tablespoon of soy sauce.
  4. Add the readily cut ingredients i.e. leak, red bell pepper, onion and carrot.
  5. Mix all ingredients well. Using your hands is advisable so that all ingredients specially the tiny ones would be properly scattered in the mixture.
  6. Then, add 2 pieces of egg and mix again. Make sure the egg is infused well in the mixture to achieve the right thickness of the patty.
  7. Add the basil leaves and 2 tablespoons of flour. Mix again. If you are still not satisfied with the texture of the mixture, you may again add eggs and flour. Amount will be up to your discretion based on your desired consistency of the mixture.
  8. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste.
  9. After mixing well, start molding the burger patties using your hands. Thickness of the patty will depend on your preference.
  10. Once done, fry the patties in a pan and drain some excess oil afterwards.
  11. Lastly, prepare the burger sandwich and add some cheese, lettuce, and other condiments as you desire.

For some who don’t prefer burgers that much, you may opt to make some coconut pulp meatballs instead of burger patties. The process is almost the same except during the molding of the mixture before frying. An additional sauce of your choice should also be prepared to compliment the meatballs.
