Bulletproof coffee is a famous coffee recipe developed by an entrepreneur and bio hacker, Dave Asprey. After discovering the recipe, he then started the Bulletproof brand and ran his own company, The Bulletproof 360 Inc. Following the success, he then authored the bestselling book The Bulletproof Diet which emphasizes on energy-boosting, low-carb, Paleolithic-inspired diet. The recipe has been widely accepted around the world that tons of versions and bulletproof-inspired coffee recipes were created.
The original recipe includes a mixture of coffee, unsalted butter and the Brain Octane Oil (an MCT oil or medium-chain triglycerides) sold by Bulletproof 360 Inc. However, many have argued if the MCT oil is really better than virgin coconut oil (or any other kind of oil rich in healthy fats). Below are points to consider.
Virgin Coconut oil is extracted in a very natural process. After harvesting mature coconut meat, coconut milk is then milled and the oil naturally separates (could be with or without the use of heat). Either of the processes being practiced, no chemicals are being used or mixed to produce the end product.
- On the other hand, MCT oil is produced by refining or fractionation, a process by which MCT oil or the medium-chain triglycerides is separated from the virgin coconut oil by using solvents and chemicals. Simply put, chemicals being used to separate the oil components to produce MCT oil is also included when one is to intake MCT oil.
- MCT oil is mostly preferred when one is under a ketogenic diet. This is because the medium-chain triglycerides oil has unique properties that makes it be rapidly used as energy for the whole body compared to other fat sources. What made MCT oil remarkable is the ability of its fatty acids to be converted into energy instead of being stored inside the body like other normal fats from different food sources.
- Lauric acid present in virgin coconut oil is high. This type of acid can help kill harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi present inside the body. Compared to other saturated fats consumed by the body, this type of fat is also converted to energy rather than stored as fat.
- Both MCT oil and virgin coconut oil causes fast metabolism for the body. MCT is way faster compared to virgin coconut oil. But basing on processing methods used upon production and other nutrients involved, virgin coconut oil is obviously richer.
Considering the facts stated above, it is still up to one’s personal discretion on which is which. Besides, both MCT oil and virgin coconut oil have lots of health benefits in them and it is undoubtedly a yes if you are to include it in your daily coffee. In the absence of MCT oil’s availability at your convenience, you may always choose to substitute virgin coconut oil and make a version of your bulletproof coffee.
For a simple recipe, just mix a portion of unsalted butter, virgin coconut oil and your regular coffee blend. You may also add coconut milk, honey, vanilla extract and/or cinnamon powder as desired. If you like a variety of ingredients in your coffee, it is best to use a blender so that all ingredients will come out well-blended and with frothy texture. However, if you don’t have the luxury to do so, you may also use a mason jar or a large coffee mug and a whisk to stir the mixture well. You may serve it hot or ice cold, whatever you prefer.
