How High Quality RBD Coconut Oil is Produced
Dehulling is the first step in the production of RBD coconut oil. Coconut meat is taken from the shell and dried. Oil is extracted from the dried coconut meat, known as copra, by pressing using expellers, followed by solvent extraction. Coconut oil is then refined to remove impurities so that it will be suitable for human consumption and to enhance its shell life. The oil is then bleached and finally heated to a very high temperature to deodorize it, while killing the germs or fungal spores within it. During the last stage of refining, desirable odor components are removed, which explains why RBD coconut oil has little or almost does not have the pleasant coconut smell and taste.
Virgin coconut oil and RBD coconut oil both originate from coconut meat but differ in the way they are processed. Some of the natural antioxidants are lost and desirable minor components of coconut oil are reduced by up to 15% during the refining process.
Uses of RBD Coconut Oil
RBD coconut oil is widely used in the manufacturing of cosmetics. Massage oils, lip and body balms, lotions and beauty soaps contain RBD coconut oil. Soap made with RBD coconut oil tends to be hard and retains more water, compared to soap made with other oils. It also lathers more easily since RBD coconut oil allows the soap to be more soluble in both hard and soft water.
RBD coconut oil is used for cooking and deep-frying at home. It is also used in the production of some processed food, baked products, and pastries. However, RBD coconut oil is not suitable for industrial frying because of the excessive smoke that results from the liberation of quite volatile medium-chain fatty acids when it is heated.
